Classic PC games, reborn for modern hardware
I'm Ed, and RenacidaMods is where I get old PC games running beautifully on today's machines: smooth frame rates at 4K, fixes, and the original feel kept intact. "Renacida" is Spanish for "reborn".
Everything here is free, and works with your own copy of each game. No game files are ever included.
Games
Magic Carpet 2: The Netherworlds
Bullfrog, 1995. The RenacidaMods edition of Magic Carpet 2 HD runs at 60 to 95 fps at 4K (24 before), with the game at its normal speed, round sprites and a faster display mode.
Fatal Racing (Whiplash)
Gremlin, 1995. The ROLLER fan rebuild already brings 4K, widescreen and high frame rates. RenacidaMods improvements are being worked on.
More classics to come.
Latest release
RenacidaMods edition of Magic Carpet 2 HD 0.2, released 26 October 2026.
A small add-on (2.7 MB) for Magic Carpet 2 HD: in-between frames up to 120 fps while the game keeps its original 24 steps a second, smoother creatures and spells, sprites at their intended shape and Direct3D 11. New in 0.2: it draws at your screen's resolution and picks its own settings, and creatures are easy to spot on the maps.
How the results are measured
Every number on this site says what it was measured on and when. So far that's one PC: an NVIDIA RTX 3090, AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and a 42" LG C3 at 3840 x 2160, 120 Hz, on Windows. Reports from other PCs are very welcome on GitHub.
Built on the fan projects
RenacidaMods builds on the fan projects that keep these games alive, and most credit belongs to them. Everything here is open source, so they're welcome to adopt anything they like:
- Magic Carpet 2 HD by Tim Hobbs (thobbsinteractive), Tomáš Veselý (turican0) and their contributors, built on Tomáš's years of reverse engineering the original game.
- ROLLER by the FatalDecomp team.
Support
If my work has made a game you love better to play, you can buy me a mana orb on Ko-fi. It goes straight into more time bringing classic games back to life. Thank you!
